MATCH PREVIEW: Playoff berth on horizon entering Saturday showdown with league leaders Nashville SC

Team Huddle vs. Portland 16 x 9

The San Jose Earthquakes will be back in front of their home crowd Saturday with a chance to clinch their first playoff berth since 2023 when they host league leaders Nashville SC in a match presented by Valley Health Plan. The first 10,000 fans will receive a Flavortown x Quakes bandana in partnership with special guest Guy Fieri and the Guy Fieri Foundation to honor local heroes for First Responders’ Night.

Kickoff from PayPal Park is set for 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally via Apple TV (English/Spanish), as well as local radio on KSFO 810 AM (English) and La Kaliente 1370 AM (Spanish).

Bruce Arena's Quakes (13-8-8) are now eight matches unbeaten after a 1-1 draw on the road against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday. Facing a 1-0 deficit in stoppage time, the Black and Blue snatched a point at the death on a last-second equalizer from Jack Jasinski. As a result, a win Saturday will clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2023.

The defense continues to impress, having conceded one goal or less in four out of their last five games and six of their last eight. Coming off the heels of Earl Edwards Jr. earning Team of the Matchday honors for his heroics in net against Colorado on Oct. 10, fellow goalkeeper Angus Gunn returned to action after international duty with Scotland to make six saves on Wednesday against RSL.

With five matches remaining in the regular season, the Quakes have maintained their position in fourth place in the Western Conference on 47 points—matching their highest total since PayPal Park opened in 2015. Now they take on their toughest test so far this season, as Nashville stands top of the league and is in a sensational run of form.

Led by former San Jose captain Cristian Espinoza (4g/14a), the Boys in Gold (20-3-6) are one win away from clinching the Supporters’ Shield and are aiming to break Inter Miami CF’s record of 74 points set in 2024. English striker Sam Surridge (17g/2a) and playmaker Hany Mukhtar (15g/8a) complete the triumvirate for Head Coach B.J. Callaghan.

The overall series between the two clubs has been remarkably even, with all four games dating back to 2022 ending in a draw. In their last meeting in 2024, Jack Skahan scored a second-half goal to equalize 1-1 at GEODIS Park in Nashville.

For San Jose, after Arena instilled rotations for Wednesday’s match, a strong lineup will be at his disposal Saturday, one that will include the German dynamic duo of Timo Werner and Eduard Löwen, who have been key cogs in the eight-match unbeaten run.

This time, the scene shifts to PayPal Park, where a home crowd hungry to get back to the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs awaits their Quakes on Saturday night. Can the Black and Blue come out on top against arguably the hottest team in MLS?
