Last Game vs. New York
Earthquakes 2 – 0 Red Bulls; Saturday, April 13, 2016; Avaya Stadium, San Jose, CA
The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-0 behind goals from midfielder Fatai Alashe and forward Chris Wondolowski. San Jose nearly broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. After Red Bulls midfielder Felipe slipped near half-field, Wondolowski broke away and set up a one-on-one with Robles, but narrowly sent his shot wide left. Seven minutes later, the Quakes were able to take the lead. Midfielder Matias Perez Garcia touched a pass to Alashe at the edge of the penalty area and his deflected shot snuck past Robles at the far post. New York nearly equalized to start the second half. In the 47th minute, halftime-substitute Bradley Wright-Phillips took a quick left-footed shot from the center of the box. Goalkeeper David Bingham fully extended to his left to make the save. The Quakes doubled their advantage in the 55th minute. Shea Salinas sent a pinpoint cross from the left flank to Wondolowski, who headed it past Robles. Wondolowski’s goal drew him level with Ante Razov for the fourth most career goals (114) in MLS history.
For The Record
The last time these two sides met, Quakes captain Chris Wondolowski scored his 114th career goal, bringing him level with Ante Razov for fourth-most goals all-time in MLS history. This time around, Wondolowski is just two goals away from an eighth consecutive season with 10 or more goals, which would extend the MLS record he set last season.
Potential Preview
Wednesday's match could serve as a preview to a potential U.S. Open Cup final, as both the Quakes and Red Bulls advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament last week. If both advance to the final, the Red Bulls would host the Quakes again.
Possible Debut
The Earthquakes new Designated Player, Valeri “Vako” Qazaishvili, travelled with the club to New York and could make his MLS debut against the Red Bulls on Wednesday. Vako made his club debut in Friday’s friendly match against Eintracht Frankfurt, subbing on in the 63rd minute.
Duty Calls
Earthquakes midfielders Anibal Godoy and Darwin Ceren, as well as forward Marco Ureña, will continue to be absent from the squad as all three advanced to the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup with their respective national teams.
