SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes and U.S. Soccer announced today that Avaya Stadium will host the U.S. Women’s National Team for a friendly against Chile on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. PT. The match will be televised on ESPN2 and Univision Deportes.
“We are excited to host one of the most respected and competitive national teams in the world again,” said Earthquakes President Tom Fox. “The athletes on U.S. Women’s National Team are excellent role models for the thousands of young soccer players in the Bay Area, and we are looking forward to welcoming them back to San Jose.”
The match on Sept. 4 will be the second match for the U.S. WNT after the 2018 Tournament of Nations and final match before the USA enters the 2018 CONCACAF Women’s Championship in a quest for a berth to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. The World Cup qualifying tournament will take place from Oct. 4-17 with the USA playing its Group A games in Cary, N.C.
The Americans have a decorated international record. In 2015, the U.S. WNT defeated Japan 5-2 in the FIFA World Cup Final in which Carli Lloyd scored a hat trick. In total, they have won three FIFA World Cups (1991, 1999, 2015) and four Olympic championships (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012). Dating back to 1991, the U.S. WNT has placed in every World Cup, earning bronze in 1995, 2003 and 2007 and silver in 2011. Until the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil where they reached the quarterfinals, the national team had also won three consecutive gold medals (2004, 2008, 2012).
The U.S. WNT features some of the biggest names in soccer, including Alex Morgan, Lloyd and Santa Clara University alumni Julie Ertz. The match will be the fourth time that the USA will play at the home of the Quakes, most recently ending its 2017 schedule with a 3-1 victory against Canada on Nov. 12.
The U.S. has not previously faced Chile in women’s soccer, and it is also just the fourth South American team the USA has faced in its history, along with Brazil (35 games), Colombia (6) and Argentina (3). At the 2018 Copa América Femenina, Chile finished in second to earn a place in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

There will be a presale for Quakes Season Pass Holders on Thursday, June 14.
