SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes forward Cristian Espinoza has been named to Major League Soccer’s Team of the Matchday, formerly known as Team of the Week, for Matchday 3. Espinoza scored the lone goal in the Earthquakes’ 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at PayPal Park. He has now tallied a goal or an assist in each of the team’s first three matches of the season.
After a scoreless first half, Espinoza gave San Jose the lead on a shot from distance. His right-footed attempt from outside the penalty area took a slight deflection and hit the underside of the crossbar on its way into the back of the net. The goal is the seventh game-winner of his MLS career.
The MLS Team of the Matchday selection is Espinoza’s eighth since joining the Earthquakes in January 2019. His goal is also currently a nominee to MLS’ Goal of the Matchday.
