SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose Earthquakes defender Reid Roberts has been named to Major League Soccer’s Team of the Matchday for Matchday 27. With seconds left in the eighth minute of stoppage time, Roberts scored a long-range goal to secure a 2-2 draw with Southern California rivals LAFC last Saturday at Levi’s Stadium.
In search of the late equalizer down 2-1 in the 98th minute, Roberts took a pass from Beau Leroux and uncorked a low shot several yards from the very top of the box. The ball rolled by the outstretched arms of LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and found the bottom-right corner of the net to send the 40,518 fans in attendance—the ninth-largest crowd in Major League Soccer regular-season play this season—into a state of euphoria. For his clutch performance, Roberts earned Northern California Honda Dealers Man of the Match honors.
This is Roberts’ third career selection to Team of the Matchday and third this season (Matchdays 11 and 18). The 22-year-old center back is in his second season since San Jose selected him fifth overall in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of San Francisco. The Earthquakes have placed at least one player on 18 of the 26 Teams of the Matchday so far this season (Matchdays 16 and 17 had one combined team).

The Black and Blue complete their homestand Saturday, Sept. 26, when they aim to complete a season sweep of the Portland Timbers for the first time in club history. Kickoff from PayPal Park is slated for 7:30 p.m. PT with the match to be broadcast on Apple TV (English/Spanish), as well as via local radio on KSFO 810 AM (English) and La Kaliente 1370 AM (Spanish).
